MCSA Weather & Air Quality Guidelines

At Mendocino County Sports Academy (MCSA), the safety and well-being of our players always come first. We monitor both air quality and heat conditions closely and follow consistent, research-backed protocols to guide all outdoor activities.

AIR QUALITY POLICY

MCSA uses real-time AQI data (Air Quality Index) to make decisions about training and game-day participation. We primarily reference PurpleAir and AirNow monitoring sites closest to our training locations.

AQI Range Air Quality Rating Activity Guidance
0–100 Good to Moderate Full participation allowed
101–149 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Adjust intensity and monitor at-risk players (e.g., asthma)
150–200 Unhealthy Cancel or move sessions indoors
201+ Very Unhealthy+ All outdoor activities canceled

We will notify families through LeagueApps Play when air quality conditions affect training, at least one hour prior to the scheduled training time. On smoky days, AQI will be checked hourly. In Ukiah, the winds generally kick up in the afternoon and often clear out smoke, so staying flexible is important.

HEAT GUIDELINES

Training in hot weather requires additional precautions. MCSA follows nationally recognized best practices based on the heat index, which considers both temperature and humidity.

Heat Index Risk Level Activity Guidelines
Under 90°F Low Normal training. Hydration every 15–20 minutes.
90–99°F Moderate Breaks every 15 minutes. Reduced intensity and duration. Shade/rest access encouraged.
100–104°F High No full-field scrimmages or conditioning. Breaks every 10 minutes. Monitor players closely.
105°F or higher Extreme All outdoor activities canceled or rescheduled indoors.

Coaches will monitor for signs of heat illness, including dizziness, nausea, cramps, and fatigue.

Communication

All weather-related changes will be communicated via LeagueApps Play. Please ensure your notification settings are turned on so you receive timely updates.
